If you are a spouse/partner of a depressed person, there are things that you can do. First, you can educate yourself on the causes of depression and you can get help for yourself. Even if you do not think you have any issues, you may need support for taking on the weight of your relationship and perhaps the brunt of the depression. You can talk to a therapist to get ideas on how to help your spouse/partner, how to help yourself and determine a plan of action that may get your life to a healthy place. The only person you can change is yourself. You cannot force someone into therapy, but by showing them that you are going to learn how to better support them emotionally as well as learning ways to take care of yourself, it may motivate them to go with you or to go on their own. Therapy may simply end up being a support network for you to deal with your depressed spouse/partner. Although the therapist can educate you on depression (including causes for depression, treatment options available), one of the biggest things you can get out of therapy is support.
