What Qualifications Does An MFT Have?
MFT stands for Marriage and Family Therapist. An MFT has to have a Masters Degree in therapy or counseling. While they are in a masters degree program, they are seeing clients as a trainee and are supervised by a licensed clinician. After earning their masters degree, they would be considered an intern, who also has to be supervised by a licensed clinician. A therapist has to complete a total of 3000 hours of clinical training while supervised by a licensed clinician before they are allowed to take the first of two licensing test given by the state of California. After passing both tests, then a therapist can be considered an MFT and can then work without being supervised.
