I’m not getting anywhere in therapy.
Suggestions from an EMDR therapist in Long Beach on how to get unstuck in therapy
Traditional therapy works for many people. The limitations of traditional therapy are that some therapy approaches focus on your feelings (limbic part of your brain) and other therapy approaches focus on your cognitions (neocortex in brain), however if your issue is stuck in your brainstem (the 3rd part of your brain), then traditional therapy wouldn’t work. EMDR works by engaging all three “parts” of your brain so that no matter where your brain is storing your issue, EMDR can reach it so that you can process the information and move forward.
Being “stuck” doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with how good or bad your therapist is, it has to do with what therapy style they use and where your issue is stored. If their therapy style matches where your issue is in your brain, then usually therapy will work for you.
Many people come to Long Beach Therapy because they aren’t getting anywhere with their current therapist. At Long Beach Therapy, we provide supplemental therapy utilizing EMDR. Often times what clients do is take a break with their current therapist, come in for 10-15 sessions of EMDR, then return to their previous therapist to complete their therapy process. Another option is that clients can continue to see their current therapist less often than they regularly would while they participate in EMDR therapy at Long Beach Therapy. During this process, Long Beach Therapy can communicate with your current therapist (with your permission) to make it a smooth transition to EMDR at Long Beach Therapy from your current therapist, and then transition back to your current therapist.
Call Long Beach Therapy to see if the issues you are “stuck” getting through are issues that EMDR can be helpful with. Common issues that clients come in to get supplemental therapy for include: PTSD, anxiety, phobias, some types of depression, and painful intercourse. We can help guide you to figure out if EMDR or another type of therapy would work best for you and your situation.
