Is anxiety real?
Written by an anxiety therapist in Long Beach
Many family members of people struggling with anxiety ask this question. And honestly, a lot of people who live with anxiety ask themselves this same question all the time.
YES, anxiety is real. It isn’t an imagined thing that you just push through. Anxiety is more like a riptide. You get through a riptide in a way that is very counterintuitive, which is that you GO WITH THE RIPTIDE. Anxiety is similar in that you need to have tools to help you go WITH the anxiety (as opposed to fighting against it). Once you learn how to get through the anxiety and get practice in feeling comfortable with the skills to get you through the anxiety, THAT IS WHEN the anxiety will start to go away.
Anxiety is all about the loss of control (it happens as a survival mechanism in your body), and anxiety management is about gaining that control back so that the anxiety isn’t so debilitating.
If you are asking yourself any of these questions, it is time to reach out for professional help so that you can take control of your anxiety: Are anxiety attacks dangerous, Will anxiety go away, Can anxiety kill me, What do I do when anxiety takes over, Why does anxiety happen, Where does anxiety come from, Where to get help for anxiety, Anxiety for no reason, Anxiety is running my life, What is the different between anxiety and worry, What is the difference between anxiety and stress, should I get tested for anxiety, what is a panic attack, and/or am I having a panic attack.
