Is EMDR Right for Me?

5 Common Questions About EMDR Trauma Therapy.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail for EMDR to work?

No. One of the benefits of EMDR is that you don’t have to describe your trauma in full detail. You only need to bring the memory to mind while the therapist guides you through the process. Many people find this less stressful than traditional talk therapy because they don’t even have to tell the therapist what the trauma was.

Will EMDR make me feel worse before I feel better?

You may feel emotional during sessions because you’re processing painful memories, but the therapist is trained to keep you grounded and safe. Most people feel relief and a sense of calm afterward—even after just a few sessions.   As a therapist, I have found it less distressing than regular talk therapy because you aren’t having to talk in detail about the memory/trauma.

How long does EMDR take to work?

Like every other type of therapy and medical treatment, it varies. Some people feel significant relief after just a few sessions, while others need several months. It depends on how complex your trauma is and how ready your nervous system is to process it.

What if I get overwhelmed or triggered during a session?

That’s okay—and it’s something your therapist is prepared for. EMDR includes preparation and calming strategies to help you stay regulated and in control. If you ever feel too overwhelmed, you can pause or stop. You’re always in control.

Will EMDR erase my memories?

No.  EMDR doesn’t erase your memory—it changes how the memory feels. You’ll still remember what happened, but it won’t feel as upsetting or intense. It becomes a memory, not a trigger.
