Attending addiction recovery meetings is a huge step in the right direction, and simply showing up is already good for your journey. Being able to show up and listen can take you pretty far in your recovery. It can help you understand that you aren’t alone, that you aren’t stupid/crazy, and can help you by hearing stories of other people’s recovery which can give you ideas on how to stay clean and sober yourself.
If showing up and listening is helping and you aren’t relapsing, then that is all you need to do.
If you are thinking about using or struggling with relapse, then it’s time to “up your recovery game”.
There’s a big difference between just being physically present (and listening) and truly participating. If you want to make the most of your recovery, at some point, it can be a lot more helpful if you can engage, connect, and be a part of the process.
Think of it like going to Disneyland. You wouldn’t drive all the way there just to sit in the parking lot and watch other people ride the rides, right? You came for the full experience, the fun, and the growth that comes with it. The same idea applies to recovery meetings. If you’re just sitting there, maybe scrolling on your phone or not interacting with others, you’re missing out on the true experience.
What’s great about recovery meetings isn’t just about hearing others speak—it’s connecting with them. It’s about getting a sponsor who can guide you and be there for you when you are struggling the most. They can help guide you with strategies that are individualized to YOU. It’s also about alking to people who understand what you’re going through, and maybe even going for coffee with the group after the meeting. These connections help you stay accountable and remind you that you’re not alone in your journey.
So, next time you’re at a meeting, challenge yourself to put your phone away, participate, and make the most of it. Get involved, share your experiences, and build relationships. Recovery isn’t something you do passively—it’s an active process. And when you fully participate, that’s when the real healing and growth happens.
