What is the first session of therapy like?

Different therapists do first sessions differently. Some take a detailed history, and some start by just getting to know you so that they can get a feel for how you operate and so they can adapt the therapy process to be what you need it to be. My first sessions with clients tend to be more of the “getting to know you” type. To me, it’s like if I am going on a road trip without GPS. I want to look at the map and have an idea of what direction might be the fastest and easiest before I waste my time going in the wrong direction.
