Finding My Child A Therapist In Long Beach

Are Therapists Who Are Parents Better Suited To Work With Kids?

Before I had kids of my own, I was always under the impression that a therapist didn’t need to be a parent in order to effectively work with children. A good therapist will always have the necessary tools to work with children and teenagers, as they have been trained to work with both adults and minors. It is still a good idea to ask any prospective therapist how much experience they have in working with kids, as you don’t necessarily want your child to be the first one that they have worked with.

My view on the parenting question has changed since I had kids of my own, as I now feel that I understand the issues of kids and parents better than I did before. I can clearly remember being a little appalled when hearing that a parent had yelled at their child. I now understand that while yelling is not the best approach to take, it often requires a raised voice to get the attention of a child who is ignoring you. I have now done away with many of the techniques I advised parent to use before I had children of my own. I have developed new techniques that come from a deeper understanding of the parent/child relationship. It is now very clear why parents do the things they do when trying to help their little ones.

The fact of the matter is that the more experience a therapist has with children, the better suited they may be to help with your issues. This may not mean that they have kids of their own, but they have had many years of experience dealing with minors and their issues. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how comfortable you feel with your chosen therapist. Experience is a major plus, but you still have to be comfortable when opening up to them.
