Is it too late in my relationship for couple’s therapy to help?
Written by a licensed therapist in Long Beach.
It is common for a couple’s therapist to see couples who believe that their relationship is past the point of no return. Being stuck inside the house together nonstop during COVID has created more strain for couples who were already unhappy in their relationships. Although I think it is ALWAYS worth trying out therapy, it is for this reason that you need to be aware of how important it is to seek professional help before your relationship reaches that tipping point. Just because your partner won’t go to therapy, doesn’t mean you can’t. Even of you go alone, you will learn a number of valuable tips and tools that can help you get back on track, and perhaps even make it easier to convince your partner to join you in future sessions. Here are just a few of the reasons whys couples seek counselling:
- Having someone objective to listen to and bounce ideas off of.
- Learning to listen. Hearing and listening are two totally different things, and you need to learn to do both and know the difference between the two.
- Learning how to communicate properly, which means speaking from the heart and refraining from yelling and put downs.
- Figuring out ways to compromise that doesn’t result in a winner and loser at the end of the conversation.
- Learning how to reconnect and rekindle the passions and positive feelings that once existed in your relationship.
