What Type Of Therapy Do You Use At Long Beach Therapy?
Since this is the question I am perhaps asked most often, I thought it would be a good idea to answer it, as well as a few others that are frequently asked.
Although I use a number of different therapy techniques, I tend to use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Therapy the most. All of which are short-term techniques and all are researched quite a bit in terms of being effective treatment approaches, especially for anxiety, depression and trauma.
EMDR is most commonly used in anxiety, trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD, and anxiety related issues. It can also be helpful in other situations, such as depression. To read more about how EMDR works, click here to check out our page dedicated to EMDR.
CBT is all about looking at how you see your life. We look into your thinking process and work on developing more helpful ways of thinking about situations.
Solution Focused Therapy is more about trying solutions that you have not yet attempted. That being said, there are clients who really need to process it out with an objective person (often a therapist) until they come to their own answer. If requested, this is an approach I am completely comfortable with as well.
In terms of delving into childhood issues: CBT and Solution Focused therapists usually don’t go much into your childhood. Although it is not my first approach to talk in depth about childhood issues, when a client and I are in agreement, we will get into childhood issues that are bleeding into their adult life and affecting how they live. When needed, EMDR is a great way of processing childhood issues without having to talk about your childhood in depth.
You may have tried one of these methods, or you may know nothing about any of them. My advice is to talk to a therapist about each one, so that you can get an idea of which makes you most comfortable. My approach is to ask a potential client a set of questions that will help me decide on the most effective form of treatment. Please feel free to contact me of you want to know more about a specific type of therapy.
