5 tips to get through the holidays:
Even though the holidays are supposed to be a relaxing time where you get to connect with family, it is often stressful and anxiety provoking. Here are some things to consider that may help you through this holiday season:
-
Set boundaries:
It’s important to remember that you are allowed to have your own wants and needs. Although you want to try to be a “team player”, that doesn’t mean that you have to put everyone’s needs in front of your own. When setting boundaries, it is important to be calm, be polite, and be firm.
-
Practice self-care:
Make sure to take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Some examples include: take breaks from socializing, sleep in, bring a book to read, take a walk, or call a friend.
-
Communicate openly:
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or upset, it can be helpful to talk about it with a family member who shares your view or a friend who you know understands. If you feel like your family can handle it, being able to communicate with them directly can help you feel heard and understood, and it can also help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.
-
Seek support:
If you aren’t sure how to do the things on this list, do what you normally do and when the holidays are over, find a therapist who can help prepare you for future holidays. A therapist can offer a safe and nonjudgmental space to talk about your feelings and they can offer strategies to set boundaries, communicate and to help you manage stress over the holidays.
-
Focus on the present:
Many people tend to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and start to ruminate over the past and/or the future. Instead, try to focus on the present moment and try to appreciate (even a small aspect of) what you have in front of you. For example, getting to see a relative you don’t often get to socialize with.
The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and celebration; however, it is 100% okay to feel overwhelmed or anxious at times. By taking care of yourself and talking to a therapist when needed, you can get through the holidays with your family and come out feeling refreshed and renewed (or at least not completely defeated).
