How to support my transgender family member during the holidays?

Written by an LGBTQ+ therapist.

The holidays can be a tough time for anyone, but it can be particularly difficult for transgender individuals who may not be fully accepted or supported by their families. If you have a transgender family member and want to show your support and acceptance, here are some tips that may be helpful.

  1. Use their correct pronouns and name:

It’s important to respect every person’s identity by using the correct pronouns and name (the ones that they prefer). If you’re not sure what pronouns or name to use, ask them.

  1. Educate yourself:

If don’t know about the issues and challenges that transgender people face, go to a local LGBTQI+ center to ask, do some research on LGBTQI+ friendly sites, or go to a LGBTQI+ therapist to ask. This can help you better understand their struggles and be a better ally.

  1. Be an ally:

Show your support by standing up for them when they’re not present and advocating for their rights in your community through your voting, your social media posts, and by the things that you say when you are out in the world.

  1. Offer a safe space:

I cannot express in words how scary it is for many transgender people.  This is why they are at the highest risk of suicide compared to any other population: because they belief that death would be easier than continuing to live in an unsafe world.  Just by you using their proper pronouns and doing things on this list, you are offering a safe space.

  1. Seek support:

If you don’t know how to support them or don’t know how to respond when family members are attacking them, find a local LGBTQI+ therapist to help you in the process.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s experiences are different and it’s okay to make mistakes as you learn and grow. By showing your love and support, you can help your transgender family member to feel accepted and valued.
